Full-time Study Requirement for Non-Immigrant Students
J-1 and F-1 students in the United States are required to be enrolled and complete a full-time academic program each fall and spring semester under U.S. immigration laws. For immigration purposes, a full-time program for an undergraduate is defined as 12 hours and as 9 hours for a graduate student. There are many possible exceptions to these rules, but all exceptions must be documented with the Office of International Affairs for Texas Tech students.
F-1 rules allow only one course or three credits taken on-line or by distance learning to count towards the full-time study requirement.
Care must be exercised in advising international students because a recommendation for a reduced load or to drop a course may be a recommendation to violate federal regulations. Any alternative levels of enrollment recommend to a student should be discussed with an International Student Counselor at 742-2974.
A “Notification of Alternative Full-Time Enrollment” form is used to document alternative levels of enrollment. These forms should be sent to International Affairs, Box 45004, Lubbock, TX 79409-5004.
