ICASALS’ 2007 Conference

The Second International Conference, “Water in Arid and Semiarid Lands” was held from September 9 – 12, 2007 in the city of Gravatá (Pernambuco), Brazil at the Hotel Fazenda Portal do Gravatá. The Brazilian Association of Water Resources – Associação Brasileira de Recursos Hídricos (ABRH) and the Federal University of Pernambuco – Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE) organized the event with the support of other Universities in Northeast Brazil and institutions from the U.S., France, Portugal, Argentina and Cape Verde.
The meeting gathered approximately 300 experts in drylands and was a continuation of the first event organized by ICASALS in 2006 at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas. Conference presentations addressed the development and use of water resources in drylands with an emphasis on the improvements made on traditional and innovative agriculture. The technical program included lectures delivered by guest speakers, oral presentations and posters oriented to technical and water resource management issues in arid and semiarid lands in the world.

The conference themes focused around public policies and water resource management in drylands; agricultural practices in areas with limited water availability; methodologies for the use of non-conventional water resources; soil salinization; remote sensing and geospatial analysis; hydrological processes; hydrological prediction in ungauged basins (PUB); and global climate changes and their impacts on arid and semiarid lands.
