High & Dry Exhibit 2005

The fifth annual High & dry Exhibit, sponsored by ICASALS, was held at the International Cultural Center (ICC) at Texas Tech University during the end of 2005. This exhibit features photographs of landscapes and peoples of the world’s dry lands. More than one-hundred entries were submitted by professional and amateur photographers from the Lubbock area, Arizona, California, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maine, Mississippi, Nebraska, Florida, and Canada. The juror for this year’s event was Mr. Joel Salcido, a professional photographer who began his career as in intern for the El Paso Times in 1979 and then hired as a staff member in 1981. He traveled to Cuba with colleagues to document the political and social transitions of the Castro regime in 1991. He currently works in Austin, TX and produces work for galleries and publications such as USA Today, Texas Monthly, and Texas Highways. His work can be found in numerous galleries both nationally and internationally.

John Bernhard, a resident of Houston, TX, won first place with his entry “Dunes”. Mr. Bernhard is originally from Geneva, Switzerland. Carol Watson, a Canadian who now resides in Wimberley, TX, won second place with her work “Red Rock Sunset”. Her image was selected to grace ICASALS digital season’s greetings distributed via email this year. Terry Cockerham won third place with “Floating”. All three of the winning entries are shown below.

Each entry showed a unique aspect of an arid or semiarid region and the annual exhibition is one way in which Texas Tech University continues to support an interest in these areas. The international High & Dry photographic exhibit has become one of ICASALS’ highlights attracting hundreds of visitors to the International Cultural Center on Texas Tech’s campus who want to enjoy unique views of arid or semiarid regions of the world. The event is also supported by Texas Tech’s Office of International Affairs (OIA) and is supervised by Dr. Jane Bell, Director of ICC Operations, who is assisted by Ms. Kim Brock, ICC Event Coordinator. This year’s exhibit was especially successful due to their efforts.
