We Carry a Heavy Load: Beauty and Burdens in the Lives of African Women
An exhibition of photographs by Willa Finley

Willa Finley lived for 15 years in Morocco and Zambia. During the 11 years she was in Zambia, she had a farming business growing flowers, vegetables, and herbs. Most of her 30 to 40 employees were women, many of them marginalized in society with little education, one or more children, and no husband, and therefore considered unemployable by most farmers. Working alongside them, she came to understand and appreciate the intricate balance of their lives and family relationships, along with the suffering they all endured – endured with a joyful smile and a ready willingness to face another day. Finley writes, “There is so much beauty in Africa – not only the brilliant colors of the earth and plants, wildlife and people, but more importantly, the sublime beauty of transforming hardship into joy. Those of us who have lived in Africa for long periods of time have left our hearts there.”
